Seasoned with Salt

One of the things the Lord is revealing by His fire in these last days is a renewed awareness that we are to be the salt of the earth and to understand the cost - and rewards - of what that means. It is the one covenant that most members of His body do not know enough about. In these last days as He calls us back to spiritual basics, there is a need to reclaim and recommit His Salt Covenant.

The Hebrew word for heave in Numbers 18:19 means "a present offered up; especially in sacrifice." The Lord enacted the Salt Covenant as an everlasting covenant between Himself and His people from the beginning.

You may ask, "But wasn't that covenant just until Jesus came and fulfilled all things?" The answer, from Jesus Himself, is no.

"For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt" (Mark 9:49).

Jesus was the fulfillment of every pattern and type in the tabernacle plan, together with all the offerings - not only as God's perfect sacrifice, but also as His high priest.

However, His transcendent purpose for fulfilling the pattern purely, perfectly and completely was to be the first born of many brethren, so that they could be conformed into the same image (Rom. 8:29). He fulfilled it so that all who believed in Him would not only know redemption, but also be able to inherit all of the Father's eternal promises as joint heirs with His begotten Son:

"… and if Children, then heirs - heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together" (Rom. 8:17).

As joint heirs we have inherited all of God's everlasting covenants, including the Salt Covenant. And, as Jesus announced in no uncertain terms from the Mark 9:49 passage, it is still very much a nonnegotiable part of our daily sacrificial lives.

Since it is an everlasting covenant, what are the spiritual ramifications and conditions that compromise this covenant of salt? What is it, and what does it mean to one's daily life and walk with Him? What aspect of our lives are we to season with it? Every aspect? How are we to keep it?

"And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt" (Lev. 2:13).

There should be no argument that the grain in the grain offering is representative of the Word of God, the gospel, and of Jesus, who is the Word made flesh, the Bread of Life. We are, as specified individual members of His body, abiding in Him as an indivisible part of that grain offering. We are partakers with Him in providing and giving the same grain offering and the Bread of Life.

"For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread" (1 Cor. 10:17).

We partake of the Lord's grain offerings and Bread of Life in order to provide that same grain offering and Bread of Life to others. "Freely you have received, freely give" (Matt. 10:8). That has always been the clarion call for everything He purchased for us on the cross. He gave His life for us so that we, in turn, could give life to others.
